I’m sorry, but I must disagree with all of the previous reviewers. When I look for latin jazz, I expect something that has at least a little swing and groove to it. While I am not intending to disparage Elis Regina and I am a fan of Jobim, this album, with a few exceptions, is a bunch of sad songs sung in portugese. It is not at all what I was expecting. Be warned that it is NOT in the vein of the Sinatra/Jobim albums, the Getz/Jobim albums, etc… Some may welcome the lack of orchestral accompaniments – for me, this was a disappointment. My feeling is that while Elis has a nice, vulnerable sounding voice, it is too thin to carry the effort by itself, which it seems to be expected to do based on these arrangements. Sorry, gang, don’t shoot me – just my opinion.

This was an important moment in Brazilian music–the combination of the most important Brazilian composer with the most important Brazilian singer. This music is beautiful and very intense in its subtleties. The music of Tom and Elis is dear to my heart (my daughter’s middle name is Elis!), and this CD is a dream come true.

Although she passed away many years ago, Elis Regina remains adored by lovers of music, especially Brazilian music. At times sad, at times funny, in turn child-like and sophisticated, Elis Regina’s interpretive gifts are showcased in this album. Of course, her signature song Aguas do Marco captivates me at each listening. This is a must have for everyone, fan or not.

I like Carlos Jobin’s music a lot so I was expecting this C.D.to be more exciting. I thought collection of music was rather poor and Regina sings with less fire. She could be better.

This record is mainly about the singing of Elis Regina and the songwriting of Antonio Carlos “Tom” Jobim. Elis Regina is a wonderful singer. She has a beautiful voice, a nice sense of style and can handle a variety of material from slow ballads to fast jazzy numbers. Tom Jobim is a songwriting genius and a fine guitar and piano player. The combination of the two makes for a great record. I might have preferred sparser, less pop-oriented arrangements, but the combination of Elis and Tom transcends the background for their performances.
